Socio-Economic Development & Sustainability

Socio-economic development is at the forefront of everything that we do. Our socio-economic investment include projects in agriculture, education, health and infrastructure.

We believe that in order to achieve sustainability in projects, there needs to be a vigorous programme which includes monitoring and reporting of the impact indicators.

We need to move away from the donor-based mentality to initiatives that apply skills transfer and growth and sustainability initiatives in collaboration with both the private and public sector.

MEET THE TEAM

Ugesh Thakurpersad

Founder

Ugesh is the founder of Shiv M Energy. Her journey in Renewable Energy (RE) began in February 2009 when she took up the challenge to spearhead the Wind Programme at Exxaro Resources and led the development of the Tsitsikamma Community Wind Farm. She went through a huge learning curve and realised her passion for transformation at both a community and corporate level. She subsequently chose  to leave a 12 year successful corporate career and founded her own consultancy specialising in economic development during 2012. She developed a large client base of multi-nationals and was contracted to various projects from tender phase to operations phase.

During 2020, the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Program (REIPPP) was revived after over 5 years and presents an opportunity for the procurement of Renewable energy over a series of bid windows, including Bid Window 5 (BW 5), with closing date 16 August 2021 of which 1 600 megawatts will be from wind and 1 000 megawatts from Solar PV.

The economic development requirements, however onerous, is hugely important for South Africa’s socio-economic growth with a new requirement being a minimum 5% Black Women Owned entity in the Ownership Structure and 25% Black ownership in the EPC.
